CREW TRAINING: KEY TO DRIVING PROJECT SELECTUNA FORWARD

30 October 2024

To date, Satlink has conducted a total of 17 training sessions as part of the Selectuna project, reaching 67 crew members in key ports such as Manta, Mahé, Bermeo, and Marín, among others.

As part of the Selectuna project, aimed at optimizing selective fishing for tropical tuna and improving the differentiation of the three main species, the collaboration of the fleet and its fieldwork is essential. This cooperation will expand the collection of on-site information and data to evaluate the performance of buoys across different oceanographic contexts and real-world operational conditions. To achieve this, crew training has become a fundamental element for the success of the program, with a dual goal: to ensure a solid understanding of the data collection procedure and the required protocol, and to maximize the effectiveness of the technology provided to optimize fishing activity.

So far, Satlink's Science and Sustainability team has conducted a total of 17 training sessions as part of the Selectuna project, reaching 67 crew members in various key industry ports, such as Manta, Mahé, Bermeo, and Marín, as well as through some online training sessions.

Through the Selectuna project, Satlink aims to improve its technology for differentiating tropical tuna species by collecting and analyzing echosounder data from buoys and the reports provided by the fleet. The technology will also be adapted in real time, where necessary, to fit the oceanographic and operational conditions of each region. The data collected will enable the company to explore other potential technological developments in the future.
